A Moment that Lasts Beyond Now is a second-year graduate exhibition at the Rhode Island School of Design. "The exhibition of second-year graduate students firmly standing with their histories, crossing histories as reflections and reactions. In "Notes of a Native Son," James Baldwin pungently surveys, "I am what time, circumstances, history have made me certainly, but I am also much more than that. So are we all." Building upon those unwavering words this gathering of artists/work will display a collective interest in pursuing an anti/inter/trans/cross/multi/blur/plur-disciplinary way of being that actively seeks fluidity between media. Resisting institutional and systemic drawn boundaries between disciplines while learning from them all cumulatively."
The visual identity draws from a New York Times article and heat map data visualizations, the latter relating to both the human body and environment. Two things that are on constant trial, whether we like it or not. From the past, to the future, and the present. With this element of omnipresence or time in mind, the visual language reflects the sense of time bending. This reflection comes across firmly in the type treatment. The type bends, blends, expands, combines, and grows into new letterforms. Hopscotching from sans to serif without restrictions. This work was in collaboration and direction with Jahi Kijo Lendor.
A Moment that Lasts Beyond Now was on display at the Rhode Island School of Design's Sol Koffler Graduate Student Gallery in Providence, RI from September 7 – October 2, 2022.
Visual Identity
The logotype for A Moment that Last Beyond Now reflects the sense of time bending by bending, blending, expanding, combining, and growing into new letterforms. Thus, the new letterforms are able to transform and emphasize seamlessly. The color palette originates from heat map visualizations. In its implementation, the colors are saturated yet soft, and blurry to evoke the feeling of everlasting yet transitioning moments. The gray/silver for the exhibition's title enforces the conceptual ideals of gleam, impact, memory, and fleeting.
